Bay Club Mattapoisett | Golf Exercise for your SpineBay Club Mattapoisett | Golf Exercise for your Spine

Dave Maloney, Fitness Director, Bay Club at Mattapoisett offers this months golf exercise of the month, “Spine Angle Turns”.

One of the most common swing faults shared by inconsistent golfers is coming out of your spine angle or loss of posture.

1) Place one of the padded bars behind your upper back so it is crossing your shoulder blades.

2) Now maintain your spine angle while you are turning into your backswing.

If you are coming out of your posture, the padded bar will be almost parallel to the ground at the top of your backswing.

Snowshoeing at the Bay Club

Thursday, 6. January 2011 16:25

Winter view of 9th hole | Bay Club Mattapoisett The Bay Club at Mattapoisett recently acquired snowshoes for the Sports and Activities Center allowing members to enjoy winter hikes on the golf course.  Snowshoeing is wonderful aerobic exercise that also provides the ability to experience the beauty and quiet of the snow-covered course in the off-season.

As part of my New Year’s resolution to exercise more, I grabbed my husband and our hound and headed out to the 9th hole.  Although the much hyped Christmas nor’easter did not actually produce an impressive accumulation, it did provide enough snow cover for a wonderful hike.  Along the way we discovered the new burm constructed late last fall on Hole #11, and I secretly crossed my fingers hoping it was the snow cover making it look so ominous.  We also paused at the new tee box on Hole #9 which has my husband itching for Spring; I on the other hand observed that the drive over the water now looks impossibly long.

When we finished our hike, my husband chose to head to the club’s Indoor Golf Practice Center while I enjoyed a Bay Club Mattapoisett MA | Golf Course Real Estatevisit to the steam room at the Sports & Activities Center.  Our well exercised dog relished a nice nap in the car.

Using my iPhone camera for the photo shot and the angle of the sun doesn’t give quality to the view, however I decided it would be nice to share.  For a better look at the club in the warmer weather, please view our slideshow!

Fitness Tip – Benefits of Foam Rolling

Sunday, 21. March 2010 22:58

Foam-rolling technique, called self-myofascial release (SMR), works similarly to massage therapy. The only difference is that rather than a therapist applying manual pressure to your muscles, you apply your body weight to the foam roller. The idea is to seek out tender spots or scar tissue, also known as knots or trigger points, and then roll your body over the foam roller to massage the tight spots to improve flexibility and relieve pain, pressure, and inflammation.

Experts differ on the best technique: placing acute pressure on a painful spot and holding for 20-30 seconds, general massage to the area or a combination of both.  Either before or after your workout to help prevent sore muscles this technique is safe to do daily.

If you have never performed SMR, you need to ask one of our personal trainers for a demonstration of proper SMR technique. The general idea is to place the roller on the floor and sit, lie, or prop the muscle on top of it, then adjust the amount of pressure applied by supporting some of your weight with your hands or legs. Foam rolling is most commonly performed on the upper back, glutes, hamstrings, adductors (inner thigh), quadriceps, calves, and iliotibial (IT) band. Let your body weight do the work!

If you have chronic muscle pain and soreness it is worth your time to give SMR, for a real treat, book a massage with Deb, who specializes in myofascial massage!
